Fifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is calling for constitutional reforms to separate parliamentary duties from ministerial appointments, arguing that the current system compromises the integrity and independence of Parliament.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Kwetey expressed concern that many politicians seek parliamentary seats merely as a pathway to gain ministerial positions, rather than with the intent to serve in the legislature.
“Parliament is about serving your people. So don’t come and say you’re here hoping to become a minister. That was not part of the contract,” he stated.
He emphasized that being appointed as a minister should be viewed as a bonus, not a primary ambition. According to Kwetey, the upcoming constitutional review must prioritize the decoupling of parliamentary membership from eligibility for ministerial appointments to promote genuine legislative service.
“You cannot use the MPship to deceive the people. If your heart is in legislation, go there and legislate,” he said, accusing some MPs of misleading voters about their true intentions.
Kwetey stressed that such a reform would foster legislative independence and strengthen Parliament’s role as a check on executive power. “Parliament must become a means of checking government,” he concluded.
