A team of journalists and officials from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on an anti-illegal mining mission in the Ashanti Region was involved in a serious road accident near Obuasi, leaving two journalists injured.

The team had embarked on an enforcement exercise targeting illegal mining activities around Dadwene, a community close to Obuasi. However, the operation turned chaotic after the group reportedly came under attack from illegal miners.

As the officers and journalists retreated for safety, one of the vehicles in their convoy was involved in an accident at Afari, worsening the situation. Several occupants sustained injuries, with two journalists reported to be in critical condition.

Among those involved was Ibrahim Abubakar, the Ashanti Regional Correspondent for Media General, who fortunately escaped major injuries. Another reporter from Adom News was also part of the affected team.

The EPA’s operation forms part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities destroying water bodies, farmlands, and forests in the Ashanti Region. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the attack and the subsequent accident.
