Electoral Commission of Ghana Denies Plans to Establish 25 New Constituencies

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has rejected rumors of its intention to create 25 additional constituencies in preparation for the 2024 general elections.

According to Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, the Deputy Commissioner responsible for Corporate Services at the EC, the commission’s only plan is to establish the Guan Constituency. He emphasized that the EC has submitted a C.I. in parliament with the sole purpose of creating the Guan Constituency, which would represent the Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lipke, and Lolobi (SALL) Traditional Areas.

Dr. Asare stated, “We have never made any statement about creating 25 constituencies. What we have consistently communicated is the creation of the Guan Constituency in the Oti Region, which would raise the total number of constituencies from 275 to 276. The recent report is misleading and appears to be an attempt to mislead the public, either causing dissatisfaction or excessive admiration for the EC.”

The EC’s Vice Chairman reiterated that, at no point, did the commission indicate plans to create 25 new constituencies.

In a prior interview with Accra-based TV3, Dr. Bossman Asare mentioned, “We are in the process of establishing some new constituencies, and the Guan District is one of them. If it weren’t for the parliamentary recess, we would have already initiated the parliamentary process.”
