President John Dramani Mahama has named Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the Acting Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA).
The announcement, made via the NCA’s official Facebook page on Friday, January 24, follows the resignation of Joe Anokye, the former Director-General, earlier this month.Joe Anokye, who served under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, stepped down amidst speculation regarding his next career moves.
As the new Acting Director-General, Rev. Fianko is tasked with building on the achievements of his predecessors while addressing the dynamic needs of Ghana’s telecommunications and electronic communications sector.
The NCA plays a pivotal role in regulating telecommunications, broadcasting, and electronic communications to ensure Ghana’s digital landscape remains robust, inclusive, and competitive on a global scale.
Under Rev. Fianko’s leadership, key areas of focus will include:
- Strengthening regulatory frameworks to foster innovation.
- Enhancing cybersecurity and data protection measures.
- Ensuring fair competition among telecom operators.
- Addressing the equitable distribution of spectrum resources, a critical issue for industry players.
Rev. Fianko is also expected to navigate the challenges posed by increasing consumer demands for improved services and the ongoing expansion of broadband connectivity, including 4G and 5G networks.
