Ecuadorian footballer Marco Angulo, 22, has died from injuries sustained in a car crash that occurred on October 7 in southern Quito, Ecuador’s capital. Angulo, who played as a midfielder for LDU Quito on loan from MLS club FC Cincinnati, was hospitalized for over a month, undergoing multiple surgeries and spending a week in intensive care before passing away on Monday night.
LDU Quito expressed their sorrow in a public statement on Tuesday, describing Angulo’s passing as an “irreparable loss” and extending condolences to his family. “His passing is an indelible mark in our hearts,” the club stated.
Angulo joined LDU Quito on loan in March and played 16 matches for the club, with his last appearance on October 6, a day before the tragic accident. He made his international debut for Ecuador in November 2022, earning three caps and representing his country in a friendly against Iraq.
The Ecuadorian Football Association also mourned his loss, remembering Angulo as an “outstanding player and a great teammate.” In their statement, they expressed deep sadness, especially for those who accompanied him on training camps, games, and trips.
Reports indicate that Roberto Cabezas of Independiente del Valle and a friend, Victor Carcopa, also lost their lives in the crash. The condition of two other passengers in the vehicle remains unknown.
