EC Sets November 11 for Nationwide By-Elections to Fill Vacant Local Seats

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced that nationwide by-elections will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, to fill vacant positions in various Electoral Areas and Unit Committees across the country.

The vacancies were created due to the resignation or death of some Assembly and Unit Committee Members, in accordance with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended by Act 940.

In a statement signed by Mrs. Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Commission, the EC indicated that nominations open on Monday, October 6, and will close on Thursday, October 16, 2025. Nomination forms are available free of charge at all EC District Offices and can also be downloaded from the Commission’s website, www.ec.gov.gh/forms.

Nomination Guidelines

  • Submission Period: Monday, October 13 – Thursday, October 16, 2025
  • Submission Hours: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily
  • Requirements: Candidates must submit four copies of the completed forms with two recent passport-sized photos (red background).
  • Endorsements:
    • Electoral Area Elections: A proposer, a seconder, and 18 registered voters.
    • Unit Committee Elections: A proposer, a seconder, and 8 registered voters.

All submissions must be made personally by the candidate or through their proposer or seconder to the Returning Officer of the respective Electoral Area.

The by-elections will take place in over 1,500 polling stations across several regions, including Greater Accra, Ashanti, Volta, Central, Eastern, Bono, Ahafo, Western, and Western North.

Notable Areas Involved:

  • Greater Accra: Ablekuma Central, Weija-Gbawe, La-Nkwantanang, Adenta
  • Central Region: Cape Coast, Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem, Mfantseman
  • Western Region: Jomoro, Ellembelle, Nzema East, Sekondi-Takoradi
  • Eastern Region: Asuogyaman, Yilo Krobo, Suhum, New Juaben
  • Ashanti Region: Adansi South, Obuasi Municipal, Bosomtwe, Offinso North
  • Volta Region: Keta, Ketu South, Ho, Afadjato South

The EC assured Ghanaians of a free, fair, and transparent electoral process and urged all eligible citizens to participate actively in the upcoming by-elections.
