The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared the results of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary rerun in Walewale null and void following the destruction of ballot papers by an unknown individual.
Gabriel Manu, the Electoral Commissioner for Walewale, explained that the voting process went smoothly until the sorting stage, when an individual disrupted proceedings and destroyed a significant number of ballot papers.
“The police managed to arrest the suspect, and while some damaged ballots were salvaged, many were too damaged to determine their validity,” Mr. Manu stated. Due to this, the EC was unable to declare a winner, and the decision on the next steps will be left to the NPP.
The Ghana Police Service has since restored order in the area following the incident.
