The Eastern South Police Command has arrested a man identified as Coffie Agyemang for allegedly attempting to sell his three-year-old son for GH¢1 million in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region.
The suspect, a resident of Kwamang, was apprehended following intelligence gathered by the Akwatia Police after concerns were raised by members of the community. According to police sources, residents disclosed that the suspect had confided in a friend about plans to sell his child due to financial hardship. The information was subsequently reported to the police, triggering an intelligence-led operation.
Police officers placed the suspect under surveillance and posed as potential buyers. During interactions with the suspect, an amount of GH¢1 million was allegedly agreed upon for the transaction.
The suspect was arrested after he reportedly brought the child to a prearranged location to finalise the deal.
Additional allegations suggest the suspect may have intended for the child to be killed for ritual purposes, after which the body would be returned to him to give the impression that the child had been murdered elsewhere. Police say these claims are part of ongoing investigations and have not yet been fully established.
Confirming the arrest, the Public Relations Officer of the Eastern South Police Command, DSP David Fianko Okyere, stated that investigations are underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.
The child has since been placed in protective custody, while the suspect remains in police custody to assist with ongoing investigations.
