The two victims who tragically died in the East Legon accident last Saturday have been identified as 12-year-old girls, according to a police report. The incident occurred when a white Jaguar SUV, driven by a 16-year-old boy, crashed into the back of the Honda Acura they were traveling in, trapping the victims inside.
The 16-year-old driver, identified as the son of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako of Alive Chapel International, caused the accident that led to the deaths. The Jaguar, with registration number GN 7801–20, struck the Honda Acura (GR 2542–23), which was being driven by Joseph Ackah. The impact caused both vehicles to hit an electric pole, sparking a fire that led to the tragic deaths of the two girls, who were burned beyond recognition.
While Joseph Ackah and two other occupants of the Honda Acura survived the crash, the two 12-year-old girls could not be rescued. The three survivors were treated for their injuries, with one still receiving medical attention at the hospital. The driver of the Jaguar and his passenger were also rescued and are being treated for their injuries.
Following the accident, Cornerstone International Academy, the school the deceased girls attended, announced an early midterm break as a gesture of mourning. In a letter to parents, the school expressed its condolences to the affected families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The police have arrested Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako and the mother of the 16-year-old driver, Mouha Amoako, to assist in the investigation. Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and a team from the Police Management Board visited the bereaved families and the injured at the hospital to offer their support.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing.
