The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the convener of the Democracy Hub protests, on Monday, September 23, 2024. His arrest follows allegations of involvement in “unlawful acts” during the group’s demonstrations held on September 21-22.
Earlier, the police had declared Barker-Vormawor wanted, but he refuted the claims in a Facebook post, calling the accusations “baseless and misleading.” According to the police, his arrest is linked to disruptive activities that occurred at the 37 Intersection in Accra.
This comes shortly after two more protesters were arrested earlier that same day for their defiant stance against illegal mining. These arrests bring the total number of detained protesters to 44. Despite the crackdown, the Democracy Hub protestors remain committed to their cause, focusing on illegal mining and environmental degradation in Ghana.
