Former Director of Communications for the 2024 Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia campaign team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has called on the government to declare a state of emergency to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking on Point Blank on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, March 10, Aboagye expressed deep concern over the worsening destruction of lands and pollution of water bodies due to illegal mining activities.
“We want the NDC to declare a state of emergency because galamsey has escalated. That is what they professed two months ago to us,” he said.
Aboagye criticized the government’s current approach, questioning its consistency. “We burnt excavators, we arrested illegal miners, we put them in jail. The president today said that was not the way to go, but that is exactly what he is doing now. He said on a campaign platform that he doesn’t understand why we were arresting people in the pits and that when he comes, he will release them—so why is he arresting them in the pits today?”
His remarks highlight the ongoing political debate on how best to handle the galamsey crisis, which continues to threaten Ghana’s environment and natural resources.
