One of the six individuals sentenced to death by hanging for attempting to overthrow the government, Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu, has been granted bail pending the hearing of his appeal.
The High Court granted Debrah bail in the sum of GH¢2.5 million with two sureties to be justified, allowing him temporary freedom as his appeal is determined.
Debrah, a fleet manager, was among six people convicted in November 2023 on charges of conspiracy to commit high treason and committing high treason. The court ruled that the group had plotted to destabilise the nation and overthrow the constitutionally elected government.
The convicted persons include Donya Kafui, alias Ezor (a blacksmith); Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu; Johannes Zikpi (a civilian employee of the Ghana Armed Forces); and three soldiers—WO II Esther Saan Dekuwine, L/Cpl Ali Solomon, and Cpl Sylvester Akanpewon. They were sentenced to death by hanging after a lengthy trial.
The high-profile case, which has been one of Ghana’s most significant treason trials in recent years, also resulted in the acquittal of ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo, Colonel Samuel Kodzo Gameli, and Corporal Seidu Abubakar, who were cleared of abetment and conspiracy charges.
The proceedings began in April 2021, with the prosecution, led by former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, presenting 13 witnesses, including seven military officers, before the court reached its verdict.
