Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has condemned the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Mahama, describing it as a “negative reset” that endangers the judiciary’s independence and democratic stability.
Speaking at an NPP-led protest on May 5, Afenyo-Markin criticised the petitions behind the suspension as “flimsy” and accused the Council of State of failing in its duty. He called on judicial staff to resist political interference, stressing that the judiciary must remain impartial.
He also warned against a cycle of political retaliation and urged Ghanaians to protect the integrity of democratic institutions for the sake of posterity.
