The Christian Council of Ghana has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to renew government commitment to completing the stalled National Cathedral project. The call was made during a courtesy visit to the Jubilee House on Tuesday, November 18.
Despite acknowledging Ghana’s current economic difficulties, the Council believes the cathedral—if completed under a transparent and accountable framework—would serve as a lasting spiritual and cultural symbol for the nation.
Rev. Enoch Thompson, Vice Chairman of the Council, said:
“While we are aware of the prevailing economic difficulties, we believe that the cathedral’s completion, under a transparent, accountable, and inclusive framework, would serve as a spiritual and cultural landmark for generations to come.”
The Council proposed three key recommendations:
- Government should reaffirm its commitment to completing the project.
- A broad-based funding model should be adopted, involving churches, the private sector, and international partners to ease the financial burden on the state.
- The Cathedral should be positioned as a national, interdenominational initiative to foster unity among Ghanaians.
The Christian Council expressed optimism that with renewed leadership attention and stronger oversight, the project could regain public trust and move closer to completion.
