Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra in connection with the ongoing probe into Akonta Mining Limited.
Chairman Wontumi arrived at the CID headquarters around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, October 6, 2025, following a directive from the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, who had cautioned that he would be arrested if he failed to report as scheduled.
The investigation relates to allegations of illegal mining activities** involving Akonta Mining Limited, a company linked to the NPP regional chairman. Dr. Ayine earlier indicated that progress on the case had stalled because crucial dockets were allegedly concealed under the previous administration.
Speaking ahead of his appearance, Andy Appiah-Kubi, counsel for Chairman Wontumi, confirmed that his client would cooperate fully with investigators, describing the Attorney General’s warning as unnecessary.
“We respect the invitation and will honour it. However, the warning that followed the announcement was unnecessary. My client has always been cooperative and has no intention to disregard the CID’s request,” Appiah-Kubi said.
The CID is expected to continue interrogations as part of efforts to determine the company’s role in the alleged illegal mining operations.
