Catholic Bishops Condemn Post-Election Violence, Advocate for National Unity

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has expressed grave concern over the violence and unrest that have followed the 2024 general elections.

In a firm statement, the Bishops condemned the violence, rioting, and looting that have disrupted national peace, leading to loss of lives, destruction of property, and deepening divisions among citizens.

“These actions are unacceptable and contradict the core values of peace, unity, and respect for life that we, as a nation, hold dear,” the statement emphasized.

The Bishops called for an immediate end to all violent activities, urging Ghanaians to protect the peace that has underpinned the country’s democratic progress. They emphasized that violence and destruction undermine democracy and disproportionately harm the most vulnerable in society.

They appealed to political party leaders to demonstrate responsible leadership during this critical period by condemning unlawful actions and promoting peace and respect for the rule of law.

“Your role as leaders extends beyond seeking power—it entails guiding your followers with wisdom, fostering peace, and ensuring the well-being of every Ghanaian,” the Bishops stated.

The Conference also urged the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to maintain professionalism and vigilance in addressing the unrest. They stressed the importance of treating perpetrators of violence as criminals, irrespective of their political affiliations, while ensuring fairness and protecting lives and property.
