The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed down unprecedented sanctions to Senegal and Morocco following incidents during the AFCON 2025 final, while officially confirming Senegal as champions of the tournament.
In a statement issued after a disciplinary review, CAF imposed heavy fines and suspensions on both teams for misconduct involving players, officials, and supporters during and after the final.
Senegal sanctions
CAF fined Senegal a total of $615,000. This includes $300,000 for supporters’ misconduct, another $300,000 for the misconduct of players and team officials, and $15,000 for accumulating five yellow cards during the final.
Head coach Pape Thiaw was suspended for five official CAF matches and fined $100,000 for conduct deemed to have brought the game into disrepute.
Players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr were each suspended for two official CAF matches for unsporting behaviour towards the referee.
Morocco sanctions
Morocco were fined a total of $415,000 following multiple disciplinary breaches. CAF imposed a $200,000 fine for misconduct by stadium ball boys and $100,000 for players and staff misconduct.
Midfielder Ismail Saibari was fined $100,000 and handed a three-match CAF suspension, while captain Achraf Hakimi received a two-match ban. An additional $15,000 fine was imposed for the use of laser pointers by fans inside the stadium.
CAF also rejected Morocco’s appeal which sought to have Senegal stripped of the AFCON 2025 title on grounds that they abandoned the match after walking off the pitch. The disciplinary board ruled that the appeal lacked merit.
As a result, Senegal have been officially confirmed as AFCON 2025 champions.
