The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has confirmed the formal withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc, effective Wednesday, January 29, 2025.

In a statement, the ECOWAS Commission acknowledged the departure of the three nations and reaffirmed its commitment to regional solidarity. The organization also outlined transitional measures to minimize disruptions for citizens and businesses during this period.

The withdrawal marks a significant shift in the region’s political and economic landscape, as the three nations have played key roles in ECOWAS’ integration efforts. Despite their exit, the bloc assured that it remains open to future collaboration with them.

To maintain continuity and minimize economic and social disruptions, ECOWAS issued several directives:

  • Recognition of Travel Documents: Member states are to continue recognizing national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo, allowing citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to travel without restrictions.
  • Uninterrupted Trade: Goods and services from the three nations will continue to benefit from the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policies.
  • Visa-Free Movement: Citizens of the withdrawing countries will retain their rights to visa-free movement, residence, and establishment within ECOWAS territories.
