The Bureau of Ghana Languages has officially endorsed the Ahanta Language Orthography for use in schools across Ahanta land, paving the way for the formal teaching and examination of the language at the basic and senior high school levels.

The endorsement was communicated in a letter dated January 15, 2026, addressed to the Member of Parliament for the Ahanta West Constituency, Mavis Kuukua Bissue.

According to the Bureau, the decision followed a detailed review of a technical paper on the Ahanta Language Orthography and an evaluation of the work carried out by the Ahanta Language Project Committee.

As part of the assessment process, a three-member evaluation team was constituted to examine the development and implementation of the orthography. The team, together with officials from the Ahanta West Municipal Education Office and coordinators of a pilot Ahanta language teaching programme, visited selected schools participating in the pilot.

During the field visits, the team engaged teachers, pupils, parents, traditional leaders, opinion leaders, church leaders and elders to assess the usage, effectiveness and acceptance of the orthography in classroom instruction.

The Bureau reported that the findings from the assessment were overwhelmingly positive, noting that the Ahanta Language Orthography meets required linguistic and educational standards. The pilot programme, it said, also demonstrated strong potential for wider implementation.

Teachers, learners and parents reportedly expressed enthusiasm for the formal teaching of Ahanta, while traditional authorities showed keen interest in seeing the language taught extensively across Ahanta land.

“In the light of these findings, we officially endorse the use of the Ahanta Language Orthography in schools on Ahanta land and for the development of learning materials,” the Bureau stated.

The endorsement marks a major milestone toward making Ahanta an examinable subject at both the Basic Education and Senior High School levels. The Bureau further indicated its readiness to certify textbooks and other instructional materials developed using the approved orthography for educational purposes.
