Bui Power Authority Expands Solar Energy Efforts, Explores Wind Power

The Bui Power Authority is ramping up efforts to harness Ghana’s renewable energy potential by expanding its solar power capacity and exploring wind energy. This was reaffirmed by CEO Ing. Samuel Kofi Dzamesi during a visit to the 50MW solar power plant currently under construction in Yendi.

The $59 million project, being executed by First Sky Limited, is expected to be operational within eight years and will be repaid by the Bui Power Authority. The plant will play a key role in providing reliable power distribution across the country, especially in the northern region, where electricity demand is significant.

Dzamesi emphasized the strategic importance of the project, stating that the abundant sunshine in Ghana provides a unique opportunity for solar energy production. “God has blessed us with the sun, and the sun, you don’t need to go and buy it before you produce the power,” he said.

The authority plans to expand the plant’s capacity to 100MW after the initial 50MW is completed. The northern region’s electricity demand ranges from 300 to 400MW, and the additional capacity from Bui Power will help stabilize power consumption and frequency in the area.

In addition to solar energy, the Bui Power Authority has initiated pilot projects to explore wind energy, aiming for a diversified approach to renewable energy generation. While solar energy offers significant benefits, Dzamesi acknowledged its limitations, underscoring the need for complementary energy sources like wind.

This expansion effort is part of the authority’s broader mission to ensure sustainable power generation for Ghana’s growing energy needs.
