On the first day of “Operation Halt 2,” a renewed military operation to combat illegal mining (galamsey), 18 changfang machines and 10 water pumps used for illegal gold mining were destroyed.
The operation, which took place on Thursday, October 10, 2024, focused on the Birim River in the Eastern Region.
Colonel Eric Tenadu, the commander of the task force, explained that the operation, which began at 8 a.m., will continue on Friday, though he did not reveal the next target area.
The operation’s initial phase is focused on protecting water bodies, with future phases set to target forests affected by galamsey activities.
“Operation Halt 2” is being conducted by personnel from the Navy, Army, and Airforce, in collaboration with the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM).
The aim is to restore the clarity of water bodies across the country affected by illegal mining.
