Bimbilla: 18-Year-Old Allegedly Takes His Own Life in Police Custody

An 18-year-old individual has reportedly taken his own life by hanging while detained in a police cell in Bimbilla, located in the Nanumba North District of the Northern region.

The young man, identified as Mbornlen Abass and commonly known as Agogo, was apprehended by police on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, following an accusation by one Pinimkpel Nampar, who claimed Abass had stolen GH¢2,000 from him.

Despite Abass’s denial of the theft, he was detained overnight in a police cell.

According to sources, an officer left to purchase food for Abass, but upon returning, found no response to his calls. The officer then opened the cell and discovered Abass’s lifeless body hanging from the ceiling with a blanket.

The deceased’s body was subsequently taken to the Bimbilla Hospital for preservation.

On Wednesday, June 27, the Regional and Divisional Police Commanders visited the scene.

The body of the deceased has since been buried.
