Bekwai Circuit Court Sentences Two Ex-Convicts to a Total of 34 Years for Robbery, Rape, and Causing Harm

The Circuit Court in Bekwai, Ashanti Region, has sentenced two ex-convicts to a combined 34 years in prison for their involvement in separate crimes of robbery, rape, and causing harm.

In the first case, 20-year-old Akwasi Agyemang was sentenced to 25 years in prison with hard labour after being found guilty of robbery. The incident occurred on August 25, 2024, when Agyemang sneaked into the residence of an 8-month-pregnant teenager in Feyiase. He threatened her with a knife, stole her belongings, and then allegedly raped her before fleeing the scene.

The victim raised an alarm, attracting neighbors who managed to apprehend Agyemang. He was arrested with the assistance of the local assembly member and subsequently appeared before the Bekwai Circuit Court, where he pleaded guilty to the robbery charge. Agyemang was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison. The rape charge is still under investigation, with the case referred to the Attorney General’s office for further advice.

In a related case, the same court sentenced 23-year-old Kwabena Ofori, a tricycle rider and ex-convict, to nine years in prison for causing harm. Ofori attacked a driver in Beposo, Bekwai Municipality, over suspicions that the driver’s younger brother was romantically involved with his girlfriend. After inflicting severe injuries on the driver, Ofori fled the scene.

Police investigations revealed that Ofori had been serving a separate sentence at the Kumasi Central Prison and was due for release on August 27, 2024. Authorities arrested him on the day of his release, and he was subsequently brought before the court, where he pleaded guilty to all charges.
