Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed deep sorrow and extended his condolences to the families of the six young women who lost their lives in the tragic stampede during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Dr. Bawumia described the event as a heartbreaking loss and prayed for healing for those injured.
He wrote: “My condolences go out to the families of the young Ghanaians who lost their lives today at the El-Wak Stadium. May the injured recover quickly, and the souls of our departed ladies rest in peace.”
The stampede reportedly occurred when thousands of job seekers crowded the stadium to participate in the GAF recruitment process. Witnesses said the large turnout and intense pushing at the entrances triggered panic, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries.
The Ghana Armed Forces later confirmed that all six deceased were female applicants. Several others sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital, with some in critical condition.
Following the tragedy, the GAF suspended the ongoing recruitment exercise and assured full cooperation with investigations to determine the cause of the incident and prevent future occurrences.
The disaster has sparked widespread grief and renewed calls for improved safety and crowd management measures during public recruitment events.
