On June 12, 2024, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia officially commenced the distribution of the One-Student, One-Tablet initiative in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) schools across the country.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in integrating Information Communication Technology (ICT) into the education system, aiming to provide students with the necessary materials for their studies.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recently launched the Smart School Project, which will see 1.3 million Smart Tablets distributed to students nationwide. During a visit to Opoku Ware School, Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum announced that tablets would be distributed there in the coming weeks.
To ensure the success of this initiative, measures are being implemented, and the tablets for second-cycle school students will be preloaded with essential textbooks and learning materials.
However, John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized the initiative, labeling it a “bribe” intended to influence student votes in the upcoming elections. He also questioned the decision to prioritize purchasing tablets over providing basic teaching and learning materials, such as textbooks, which have been lacking in schools for years.
