Minister for Justice and Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has confirmed that a formal extradition request for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and alleged accomplice Ernest Darko Akore has been transmitted to the United States.

Speaking on Thursday, December 18, 2025, during the government’s Accountability Series, Dr. Ayine explained that the extradition process was initiated by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on November 19, 2025, relating to the Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) case and alleged financial losses to the state.

An initial review by the International Cooperation Unit of the Attorney-General’s Department highlighted documentation gaps, which were communicated to the OSP on November 25. The OSP subsequently submitted the required supplementary documents on December 9, finalizing the extradition request.

Dr. Ayine confirmed that the completed request was forwarded to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on December 10, 2025, for transmission to the relevant US authorities, including the Department of Justice.

He noted that the next phase now rests with the American judicial system to determine whether there is sufficient basis to extradite the two individuals to Ghana to stand trial.
