At least 60 people have tragically lost their lives after a boat carrying mostly women and children capsized in Nigeria’s northern Niger state.
The boat was returning from a religious festival when the accident occurred late on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.
The wooden boat, which was transporting nearly 300 passengers, sank on the River Niger near the Gbajibo Community.
According to Jibril Abdullahi Muregi, the chairman of the Mokwa local government area, around 160 people have been rescued, while search and rescue efforts continue for the remaining passengers.
