The Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, is scheduled to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service today, Tuesday, November 4, 2025. His appearance forms part of ongoing investigations into his alleged involvement in obstructing an anti-illegal mining operation conducted by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).
The lawmaker’s invitation follows an incident in which a NAIMOS taskforce reportedly encountered resistance from a group of youth during an operation to clamp down on illegal mining activities near Bronikrom–Hwediem in the Ahafo Region.
The operation is said to have turned chaotic after the taskforce arrested two suspected illegal miners and seized several vehicles and weapons at the site. The arrests allegedly provoked unrest among local residents, who confronted the officers and disrupted the operation.
Police personnel were later deployed to the area to restore calm and ensure the safety of the NAIMOS team.
Mr. Addo, who is cooperating with the investigation, has denied allegations that he incited the mob. He explained that his intervention was intended to prevent the situation from escalating.
“I only sought to calm tensions by engaging community leaders, including the Zongo Chief, to ensure the safety of the taskforce members,” he said.
According to him, his actions were purely aimed at maintaining peace and preventing a breakdown of public order rather than obstructing the lawful work of the anti-illegal mining taskforce.
The CID’s inquiry is part of a broader investigation into the Hwediem anti-galamsey clash, which has drawn public attention to the growing tension between state taskforces and local communities over illegal mining enforcement operations.
