The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has formally presented the Bawku Peace Mediation Report to President John Dramani Mahama, marking a significant step in ongoing efforts to secure lasting peace in the conflict-prone township.
The presentation took place on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at the Jubilee House, with traditional leaders, senior government officials, and key stakeholders in attendance. Proceedings began with the arrival of chiefs and invited guests, followed by the Chief of Staff, the Asantehene, and President Mahama.
After the national anthem and an opening prayer, the Director of State Protocol delivered introductory remarks, followed by a welcome address from the Minister of the Interior.
Presenting the report, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II explained that the mediation process was strictly aimed at fostering dialogue and consensus, not assigning blame. He stressed that the recommendations contained in the report should be binding on all parties involved to ensure sustainable peace.
“I am here to present the facts as they are for us to have peace. This was mediation, not arbitration. The report should bind on all of us,” the Asantehene stated.
He also expressed appreciation to President Mahama for the trust reposed in him to lead the mediation process and facilitate dialogue among the factions involved in the long-standing Bawku conflict.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was originally appointed by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and subsequently retained by President Mahama to continue mediation efforts. The process officially began in April 2025 with separate consultations as confidence-building measures, briefly paused, and later resumed in May 2025.
The presentation of the report represents a major milestone, as government and stakeholders study its recommendations toward achieving a durable resolution to the Bawku chieftaincy dispute, which has affected social and economic activities in the area for decades.
