Asante Kotoko SC has indefinitely suspended all senior team football activities in response to the tragic killing of their dedicated supporter, Francis Yaw Frimpong, at Nana Koramansah Park.
In a strongly worded statement, Asante Kotoko expressed profound sorrow over the incident, describing it as a senseless and heinous act that has devastated the entire Kotoko fraternity.
Despite their grief, the club acknowledged the swift response of the Ghana Police Service, which has already led to the arrest of three suspects. Kotoko commended the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Bono Regional Police Commander, and COP Lydia Donkor for their efforts in seeking justice.
Asante Kotoko urged their supporters to remain calm despite the provocation, expressing gratitude for their restraint during this difficult period.
The club extended appreciation to Accra Hearts of Oak and the entire Ghanaian football community for their solidarity and emphasized the need for a collective effort to eradicate hooliganism from Ghanaian football.
Additionally, Kotoko assured the family of Francis Yaw Frimpong of full support and promised to communicate funeral arrangements in due course.
The club confirmed receiving an invitation from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for discussions regarding the incident. Kotoko assured their fans that any decisions made would honour Frimpong’s memory while protecting the club’s interests.
“As a club, we are determined to ensure that this painful moment becomes a turning point for Ghanaian football. It is time to end the cycle of violence, hooliganism, and lawlessness that threaten the integrity of our game,” the statement read.
All senior team football activities have been suspended until further notice. However, the club clarified that their juvenile team and injured players requiring rehabilitation would still have access to the training centre.
Kotoko firmly stated that they will not return to footballing duties until justice is served and concrete measures are implemented to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
The statement concluded with a resolute commitment:
“We will not relent until the right thing is done.”
