Environmental conservation organization AROCHA Ghana, along with other NGOs, has called for the dismissal of Eastern South Police Commander DCOP George Boadi Bossman and Kyebi Divisional Police Commander ACP Reynolds Sam. The demand comes amid allegations of their failure to effectively combat illegal mining (galamsey) in the Eastern Region.
At a press conference in Accra on March 7, AROCHA’s Deputy National Director, Daryl Bosu, criticized the commanders’ leadership, citing ongoing destruction of water bodies like the River Danso and River Birim.
“The failure to enforce laws against illegal mining in the Eastern Region is a clear indication of poor leadership and complicity by both commands. We need dedicated officers who will prioritize law enforcement and halt the escalating impunity,” Bosu stated.
The group also demanded the replacement of the Executive Director of the Minerals Commission, citing a lack of effective action against illegal mining nationwide.
“We call on the government to appoint a visionary leader to the Minerals Commission who will champion responsible mining practices and environmental protection,” Bosu added.
