A tragic bee attack at Anloga Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Basic School in the Volta Region has resulted in the death of a seven-year-old pupil and left three others in critical condition.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, when students playing football accidentally disturbed a hidden beehive after a ball got stuck in a tree. A stone thrown to retrieve the ball provoked a swarm of bees, which attacked pupils and teachers within the school compound.
Headteacher Thywill Deynu said several students, particularly kindergarten pupils, were unable to escape the swarm. Four critically injured pupils were rushed to the Keta Municipal Hospital, where one girl was pronounced dead on arrival.
Teachers acted swiftly to evacuate pupils and limit casualties, while personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service in Anloga later arrived to control the swarm and secure the area.
The deceased child’s body has been deposited at the Keta Municipal Hospital mortuary for autopsy. The three injured pupils, all under nine years old, remain on admission and are being closely monitored by health officials.
School authorities, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service, say they are reviewing safety measures to prevent future bee-related incidents, as parents and community members call for urgent action to protect pupils.
