Medeama’s hopes of advancing to the knockout stage of the CAF Champions League took a hit as they suffered a 1-0 defeat against 11-time champions Al Ahly at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi. The Tarkwa-based club faced a tough challenge against the experienced Al Ahly side, who displayed superior tactics, leaving Medeama’s campaign in jeopardy.
Medeama’s chances of progressing beyond the group stage seem slim, especially with an upcoming away match against RC Belouizdad in Algeria. Despite their attacking intent, as demonstrated by Derrick Fordjour’s early attempt, Medeama struggled to make a breakthrough against Al Ahly’s defense.
Al Ahly took control of the game and impressed the home fans with their passing, surviving Medeama’s initial pressure. Despite Medeama’s efforts to score, including attempts by Nana Kofi Babil and Fatawu Hamidu, Al Ahly’s goalkeeper, Oufa Shobeir, made crucial saves to keep his team in the lead.
Medeama continued to push for a goal, with Daniel Lomotey and Bernadino Tetteh coming close. However, it was Al Ahly who broke the deadlock early in the second half, with Houssein El Sahat scoring from Anthony Modeste’s assist. Despite Medeama’s efforts to equalize, Al Ahly’s defense held firm, denying the home team any clear-cut chances.
Both teams made tactical changes in the second half, but it was Al Ahly who dominated possession and nearly doubled their lead through Emr El Solia. In the end, Al Ahly secured a deserved victory, maintaining their lead in Group D with nine points. They will face Young Africans in their next match on March 2nd.
