Air India Crash That Killed 270 Linked to Pilot Seat Malfunction – Investigation Reveals

A preliminary investigation into the deadly Air India Boeing 787 crash that killed 270 people has revealed a shocking mechanical failure: the pilot’s seat locking mechanism malfunctioned during takeoff, causing a chain reaction that led to the fatal accident.

According to the initial report, the captain’s seat slid backward suddenly due to a failed locking system. This unintentional movement caused the captain to pull the throttle levers into the “idle” position, drastically cutting engine power just seconds after liftoff.

The co-pilot’s efforts to regain control were reportedly hampered by the captain’s reclined position, which blocked access to crucial controls. Just 26 seconds after takeoff, the aircraft stalled at a height of 214 feet and crashed into a nearby building housing medical workers.

Key moments from the flight data and cockpit voice recordings include:

+12 seconds: Captain’s seat unexpectedly slides back
+15 seconds: Co-pilot shouts, “We’re losing thrust!”
+26 seconds: Aircraft stalls and crashes

The investigation also criticized Boeing’s 787 aircraft design for lacking essential safety features such as reverse-motion protection on the thrust levers and emergency override protocols like “GO-AROUND” or “STAB TRIM.”

In response to the findings, global aviation authorities have taken urgent steps. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have ordered inspections of all Boeing 787 pilot seats. Air India has grounded 12 aircraft with similar maintenance histories, and Boeing has pledged to redesign the faulty seat mechanism, with improvements expected by 2026.

The final death toll includes passengers, crew members, and individuals in the hostel struck by the plane. The only known survivor is a British national who remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment.

A full investigation report is expected in July 2025, with global aviation authorities promising sweeping reforms to enhance cockpit safety standards and inspection protocols.
