Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has responded to a lawsuit challenging the religious policies of Wesley Girls’ Senior High School (SHS).
The case, filed in December 2024 by lawyer Shafic Osman, alleges that the school bars Muslim students from wearing the hijab, fasting during Ramadan, and practicing other aspects of their faith. The plaintiffs contend that these restrictions breach Ghana’s constitutional guarantee of religious freedom.
In his response, the Attorney General dismissed the claims, arguing that the Methodist-run school has the right to enforce rules rooted in its religious identity. He maintained that the institution can legitimately uphold its Methodist values even if such rules limit certain expressions of other faiths.
The matter now awaits determination by the Supreme Court, which will decide whether the school’s policies align with the Constitution.
