Accra Technical University Launches 75th Anniversary

The Accra Technical University (ATU) has inaugurated its 75th anniversary celebrations, underscoring the pivotal role of technical education in addressing societal challenges. The Deputy Minister of Education overseeing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Gifty Twum-Ampofo, urged graduates of technical universities to leverage their skills to tackle community issues effectively.

During the anniversary launch held in Accra, Twum-Ampofo, representing the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, emphasized the importance of continuous learning, advising master craftsmen to embrace training opportunities and adapt to the evolving digital landscape.

Under the theme “75 years of impacting society and driving innovation,” the event unveiled an anniversary logo symbolizing ATU’s commitment to excellence in both TVET and academic realms.

The festivities encompass a diverse array of activities including games, public lectures, conferences, awards ceremonies, exhibitions, and cultural showcases.

Highlighting government initiatives to bolster technical education, Twum-Ampofo mentioned the provision of modern industrial equipment to ten technical universities and the Ghana TVET Voucher Project aimed at training master craftsmen and apprentices. Additionally, the Ghana Skills Development Fund offers grants to enhance industry capabilities.

ATU, in collaboration with governmental support, continues to enhance its capacity to deliver quality technical education, with plans underway to introduce new courses and establish Master’s programs in technology.

Acting Vice-Chancellor of ATU, Professor Amevi Acakpovi, outlined achievements such as increased student enrollment, the establishment of Centers of Excellence, and infrastructure development. However, challenges persist, including land encroachment, inadequate access roads, and the need for additional staff and vehicles.

Dr. Wilfred K. Anim-Odame, Chairman of the Governing Council, lauded the university’s comprehensive curriculum spanning engineering, applied sciences, business, and more, at various academic levels. He acknowledged the government’s steadfast support in advancing TVET for national development.
