The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has appealed to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to refrain from contesting any future by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency.

His call follows the death of the Member of Parliament for the area, Naser Toure Mahama, who passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News, the Accra Mayor said allowing a non-competitive by-election would be a sign of respect to the late legislator and help maintain peace in the constituency.

According to him, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) is prepared to take a decision that prioritises unity and the interests of the electorate rather than political competition.

He expressed hope that the opposition would show similar restraint by staying out of the by-election to honour the memory of the deceased MP.
