A Lost Drip Deep In A Trance Of Dr Kwame Nkrumah- Baba Charles Writes

So, I woke up this morning and I learnt it’s a holiday and I asked out of curiosity, what holiday it is in September, and I was told its Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s birthday, WOOW!!!

Don’t be surprised I forgot because I believe am not the only victim of this. I know many Ghanaians out there also don’t know what holiday they are observing.

Hmmmmm!! It’s very sad most Ghanaians have forgotten about our superhero, I believe it’s because many people have projected Dr. Nkrumah as an unconcerned, wicked and a selfish leader who did not do anything good for Ghana after he became the first president.

However, to be me, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and his five brothers, popularly known as the big six in Ghana, are what I call the Avengers, who stood and fought Thanos (the Whiteman) in the last battle I call End Game with the last drop of their blood.

The Big Six

Let’s be honest with ourselves, how many of our leaders after Dr. Nkrumah has been able to construct a Motorway like the Tema Motorway. The only thing they have done over years is to expand it due to the number of horrible accidents and increasing vehicular traffic on the road.

Again, how many of our leaders after him have been able to build a dam like Akosombo Dam. This dam has served the country with constant electricity over decades, until recently we started experiencing power shortage, which we all know to be called ‘DUMSOR.’

Let’s not even come to employment sector, because under his regime many Ghanaian youths were employed in the various sectors especially in the sector of Agriculture. Dr. Nkrumah in his wisdom build many warehouses for goods to be kept and later on sell at a high price to foreigners. But what has happened all those companies, factories and warehouses after he was overthrown prematurely.

Am I saying Dr. Nkrumah is a perfect person, NO! He had his flaws and weakness just as any other man or leader has.

I am not a politician, in fact, I have grown hating politics, and I don’t hold any diploma or degree in Political Science, even though I studied political science as part of my university courses at African University College of Communications (AUCC).

But rather I hold a degree in Journalism. I am just like any other Ghanaian citizen who wishes to see our leaders who has got leadership qualities like our dear Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to change the country’s fortunes.

A leader who is a doer not a talker, a leader who is a promise keeper not a promise breaker and forget so easily.

I remember back in primary 6, in social studies, we were told Dr. Kwame Nkrumah had a 10-year development plan for Ghana, however, the man did not live enough to see all his plans for Ghana come pass as he was overthrown overnight, SAD!!!

“This plan was the most comprehensive developmental plan to be made in Ghana because it almost covered all the major sectors of the economy. The basic aim of the plan was to modernize agriculture and develop industry on the basis of a socialist society. The plan was to operate under the politico-economic philosophy of work and happiness. Included in the plan were. Extensive infrastructure development: Tema Township, Tema Motorway, Tema Harbour, Akosombo Dam. Massive development of education such as the establishment of KNUST and 26 secondary schools under the Trust Schools Scheme (for example, Ghana National College, Sunyani Secondary School, Dormaa Secondary School, Mfantseman, Asankragua, St.Johns, and many others. Establishment of several factories.”
“The plan was supposed to use 74 million as the implementation fund. In terms of implementation, it operated from 1951 to 1956 because it coincided with the independence of Ghana. Then from 1958 to 1959, there was the consolidated plan aimed at putting things together in preparation for the second 5-Year plan, which existed between 1959 and 1964”

In his reign as the president, for me I believe he did a lot per his achievements I have seen practically as I grew up. I believe he would have done better if he was given time.

With the current situation and conditions in this country, sometimes I feel our forefathers who fought so hard to set us free from the power of the Whiteman look at us with tears, because they can’t distinguish between the Ghana today from the Ghana which was ruled and controlled by the Whiteman.

On that faithful night, When Dr. Nkrumah and his team stood on that platform and declared, “Ghana, your beloved country is free forever,” little did he know that after some years we will go back to the Whiteman with our empty calabash to receive. We failed after his tenure to manage our own affairs as he once declared.

Physically, we have freedom but mentally, we are slaves to the Whiteman. WHAT A PITY!!!

Recently, I saw a video of how many people in Ghana took to the streets to celebrate over his government which was overthrown. SAD!!! Is this the best way to repay him? I tell you, I believe Nkrumah cursed Ghana before he joined his ancestors.

I will conclude by saying, let’s not forget our history, culture and heritage. Ghana is not one political party state, this beautiful land belongs all of us. Until we go back to our roots as Ghanaians, we will not get to where our fore-fathers thought we would be after they are gone.
