The Osino District Court in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region has granted bail to 15 National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters accused of setting the Electoral Commission (EC) office in Asuboi ablaze.
The arson attack occurred on December 10, 2024, during a protest by a group calling itself Ayensuano Concerned Youth. The group was demonstrating against the declaration of Ida Adwoa Asiedu as the MP-elect for the Ayensuano Constituency.
The protest escalated, leading to the EC office being set on fire. The suspects were subsequently arrested and charged with arson.
The court, presided over by His Worship Salifu Bugri Ayagiba, granted each of the accused a bail of GH₵20,000 with one surety, despite objections from the prosecution. The suspects are required to report to the Kibi Police Commander to ensure their availability for ongoing investigations.
They are scheduled to reappear in court on January 14, 2025.
Detective Chief Inspector Kamal Salifu Gumah opposed the bail, citing ongoing investigations and expressing concerns that the suspects might interfere with the process.
The defence counsel assured the court that the accused were respected members of their community who would cooperate with legal proceedings. The court accepted this assurance and granted bail.
Speaking after the court’s decision, the defence counsel expressed gratitude, emphasizing that the accusations against the suspects must be substantiated with evidence.
“These are mere accusations. If the police can provide evidence, fine. If not, the case will be dismissed,” he stated.
The case highlights the ongoing tensions in the Ayensuano Constituency following the parliamentary election results, with the next court session expected to provide further clarity.
