As Ghana prepares for its presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7, 2024, the U.S. Department of State has implemented a visa restriction policy targeting individuals undermining democratic processes in the country.
Announced on October 28, this policy falls under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act and aims to restrict visas for those involved in actions disrupting Ghana’s democratic framework.
The U.S. clarified that this policy is directed at specific individuals responsible for electoral interference, voter intimidation, violence, and efforts to manipulate election results, rather than the Ghanaian public or government.
Family members of those implicated may also face visa restrictions.
Acknowledging Ghana’s legacy of peaceful democratic transitions over the past three decades, the U.S. reiterated its commitment to supporting a fair and transparent election, reinforcing democratic values globally.
This policy serves as a warning that any actions threatening Ghana’s democracy will have consequences, with visa restrictions potentially applied before, during, and after the upcoming elections.
