Parliament Refutes Claims of Settlement Talks Between Speaker Bagbin and President Akufo-Addo Over Vacant Seats

Parliament has denied allegations that Speaker Alban Bagbin held a meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to negotiate a settlement concerning the recent declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.

On October 17, Speaker Bagbin declared the Fomena, Amenfi Central, Suhum, and Agona West seats vacant, a decision which the Supreme Court has since stayed. Rumours circulating on social media suggested that the Speaker met with the President to discuss a resolution.

In a statement released on October 22, Parliament clarified that the video being shared was actually taken during the presentation of the maiden Democracy Cup to the President on July 4, 2024, and has no connection to the current parliamentary issue. Parliament emphasized that no such negotiation has taken place and urged the public to disregard the misinformation.

The statement further criticized the attempt to mislead the public, describing it as “disingenuous” and urged people to treat the false claims with “the contempt they deserve.”
