Record-Breaking 157 Schools Set to Compete in 2024 National Science and Maths Quiz

A historic total of 157 schools will participate in the 2024 edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), the largest number of participants since the competition’s inception.

This year, 126 schools will compete at the preliminary stage, featuring both public and private senior high schools across the country. The event, which was launched in Accra on October 1, will take place for the first time in Cape Coast, from October 14 to 30.

During the launch, Stephen Kwaku Owusu, the Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), urged schools, students, and parents to embrace the competition, emphasizing its importance in promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.

“The NSMQ has proven to be a powerful platform for promoting STEM education and inspiring young minds. We encourage more schools to participate, showcasing and improving the talents and knowledge of their students,” he said.

Owusu also highlighted the government’s efforts in strengthening STEM infrastructure and curriculum, expressing pride in supporting initiatives like the NSMQ, which cultivates essential skills for Ghana’s development. He encouraged participants to uphold the values of teamwork, confidence, diligence, and healthy competition.

Nana Akua Mensa-Bonsu, Managing Director of Primetime Limited, the producers of the NSMQ, also praised the competition’s role in nurturing future leaders in STEM-related fields. She congratulated all participating schools, especially regional and zonal champions, as well as six schools making their debut in the competition.

This year’s NSMQ promises not only academic achievements but also opportunities for growth and unity. Students will engage with professionals through the Mentorship sessions, introduced in 2013 as part of the STEM festival initiative by Primetime.

The competition will offer over 15 prizes, awards, and scholarships for outstanding performances.
