Anti-LGBTQ Bill Proponents Plan Protest Against Chief Justice Over Delay

Proponents of the anti-LGBTQ bill have announced a planned demonstration against the Chief Justice on August 21, 2024, due to what they perceive as delays in advancing the bill to the President for approval.

The delay follows a decision by the Supreme Court to postpone ruling on injunction applications related to the bill. Dr. Amanda Odoi and Broadcast Journalist Richard Sky had filed for injunctions, but the court opted to deliver its ruling on the same day as the final judgment, rather than addressing the injunctions separately.

Samuel Nartey George, the lead sponsor of the anti-LGBTQ bill, expressed frustration during a recent visit to the National Chief Imam and the Acting President of the Osu Traditional Council. He stated that the Chief Justice is responsible for the current delay, as the bill remains in judicial limbo.

George emphasized that the planned protest will be peaceful, aiming to urge the Chief Justice to expedite the judicial process and allow the bill to proceed to the President for final assent. He asserted that the public’s patience is running thin and that the delay is hindering legislative progress.

The demonstration will seek to hold the Chief Justice accountable and ensure that the bill receives the attention it requires for timely resolution.
