Two Civilians Dead Following Clash with Tema Naval Base

A tragic incident unfolded at the Tema Naval Base of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), resulting in the deaths of two civilians. The Ghana Armed Forces released a press statement on April 13, 2024, detailing the events leading to the fatalities.

The confrontation began when a group of individuals participating in a festival in Tema Newtown attacked a vehicle belonging to the Eastern Naval Command of the Ghana Navy around 7:53 pm on Friday, April 12, 2024. The mob damaged the vehicle and injured three naval personnel who were onboard.

The injured officers were promptly transported to the Tema Naval Base Medical Centre for treatment. In response to the attack, the naval personnel arrested three suspects, who were subsequently handed over to the Tema Newtown District Police for further investigation.

Despite this, another group suspected to be affiliated with the festival participants launched a second attack on the naval base, hurling stones and other objects. Their aim was reportedly to free the detained individuals.

In defense of the base’s security and to protect its sensitive installations, the naval personnel fired warning shots to repel the attack, as they felt threatened by the mob’s actions.

Following the incidents, the Ghana Police Service reported that two deceased individuals were taken to the Tema General Hospital. The cause of their deaths is yet to be determined.

Both the police and the Ghana Armed Forces have initiated investigations into the matter, with the findings expected to be disclosed in due course. GAF expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and called for calm from all parties involved while the investigations proceed.
