Minister of Communications Summoned by Parliament to Address Ongoing Internet Challenges

The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, is scheduled to appear before Parliament today, Monday, March 18, to shed light on the government’s efforts to tackle the persistent internet disruptions in the nation.

The prolonged interruption in internet connectivity, spanning five consecutive days, has sparked widespread frustration among the populace.

Despite the National Communications Authority’s announcement of a five-week timeline for restoring normalcy, Members of Parliament (MPs) deem it imperative for the Minister to update Ghanaians on the measures being taken to rectify the situation.

Emphasizing the urgency of the Minister’s briefing amidst continuous updates from telecommunication service providers, the MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto, stressed the importance of understanding the progress made in addressing the issue. He particularly highlighted potential national security implications stemming from multiple disruptions of submarine fiber optic cables in international waters.

Okudzeto stated, “The Ghana Telecommunication Chamber and the telcos have all issued statements pleading with their subscribers to bear with them. They say that there have been multiple submarine fiber optic cable disruptions in the high seas, and we do not know the extent of the distractions, and this is a national security issue.”

He appealed for the Communications Minister to provide insights into the government’s actions aimed at restoring normalcy, thereby enabling access to internet and data services.
