Former President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to introduce an extra public holiday for Muslims to coincide with Eid-ul-Fitr, addressing concerns regarding the 29 or 30-day rule for moon sighting during Ramadan.
Mahama assured attendees at the 63rd Annual National Conference of the Ghana Muslim Mission in Kumasi that this initiative aims to ensure that all Muslim community members can fully enjoy the public holiday at the end of Ramadan.
He outlined the intention to modify the Public Holidays Act to accommodate the additional holiday without compromising national productivity. Mahama assured that Ghana would maintain the same number of public holidays per year even with this inclusion.
The former President’s proposal to introduce an extra holiday specifically for Eid-ul-Fitr demonstrates his commitment to accommodating and honoring religious observances within Ghana’s diverse cultural landscape.
