I am Still the President of the Republic, and I will Continue to do so Until January 7, 2025 – Akuffo Addo to Bagbin

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has countered assertions made by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, stating that he remains Ghana’s active President until January 7, 2025, as prescribed by the country’s 1992 Constitution.

Addressing a gathering in Nima, Accra, President Akufo-Addo refuted claims of being a “lame-duck” leader, emphasizing his commitment to serve the nation until the end of his constitutional term. In response to Bagbin’s remarks suggesting waning loyalty post the selection of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections, Akufo-Addo highlighted that the authority to shape policies and make decisions firmly rests within his grasp.

During a meeting with local chiefs and residents, the President firmly stated, “I am still the president of the republic, and I will continue to do so until January 7, 2025. I have no doubt that the power to make decisions and to carry out policies is still firmly in my hands, and I am not going to let it go.”

Alban Bagbin previously expressed concerns about potential political gridlock, urging collaboration between the government and the Minority side to avert any stalemates. He referenced a shift in loyalty following the Vice President’s elevation to the party’s flagbearer position, stating, “Your president is now a lame-duck president.”

President Akufo-Addo’s strong rebuttal to these assertions reaffirms his stance on maintaining control and leadership until the end of his term, dismissing any suggestions of being a diminished figure in Ghana’s political landscape.
