The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to immediately declare a state of emergency to address the growing menace of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, which they describe as a threat to national security.
In a statement dated November 10, 2025, and signed by the NPP National Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha, the group expressed deep concern over recent events involving the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) boss, Prof. Nana Ama Klutse, and her team. According to the statement, Prof. Klutse and a group of national security officers were reportedly forced to flee for their lives after being overpowered and outgunned by illegal miners dressed in CID vests.
The Youth Wing described the incident as a display of “bold audacity and impunity” by the galamsey cartels and warned that the situation could escalate into a national security crisis if not tackled decisively.
“Mr. President, if you have ever needed a definite reason to declare a state of emergency to quell the growing danger, then you have it now,” the statement read.
The group also criticized the national security secretariat for allegedly failing to act effectively against the galamsey operators, leading to chaos and casualties. They lamented the loss of eight security officers in a recent confrontation, describing it as a national tragedy that underscores the urgency of the situation.
The statement further urged the President to dismiss all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in areas where galamsey activities persist, accusing them of either negligence or complicity.
“We are alarmed. Danger beckons, and your inaction will break the camel’s back,” the statement concluded, emphasizing that the NPP Youth Wing and the entire nation await a firm response from the President.
