Safina Namukwaya, a 70-year-old woman in Uganda, made history by giving birth to twins – a boy and a girl – through IVF treatment at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Kampala. This remarkable feat established her as one of the oldest mothers in the world. Namukwaya underwent a successful caesarean delivery and both she and the newborns are reported to be in good health.
Her journey to motherhood at this age wasn’t without hurdles. She faced societal stigma for being childless and endured hurtful comments in her community. Namukwaya expressed that her partner wasn’t supportive upon learning she was carrying twins, and he remained absent during her hospital stay. Financial strain due to healthcare costs was a significant challenge, having almost depleted her savings.
Namukwaya’s motivation to conceive at an advanced age stemmed from her fear of loneliness in old age, having witnessed other children she cared for grow up and move on. While it remains unknown whether she used her own eggs or a donor’s for IVF, she firmly believes in the blessing each child brings and entrusted their care to God.
Despite the challenges and the absence of her partner during this critical time, Namukwaya expressed gratitude to her doctor for their kindness. Her story stands as an exceptional example of determination and hope against societal expectations and physical limitations.
