For the first time in Ghana’s educational history, 25 private senior high schools have been added to the Free SHS programme under the 2025 Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

Announced by the Ministry of Education, this strategic move aims to expand access to quality secondary education, particularly in regions where public SHSs are over-subscribed or face infrastructural limitations.

The approved schools, categorized as “Category E” under CSSPS are co-educational day institutions located across all 16 regions. They offer a variety of programmes, including General Arts, General Science, Business, Technical, Visual Arts, Home Economics, and Agriculture.

A statement from the Ghana Education Service (GES), signed by Prince Agyemang-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instruction Division, confirmed that the school selection deadline has been extended to Wednesday, June 25, 2025, to allow candidates time to consider the newly added private institutions.

The initiative is a pilot project implemented in collaboration with the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS), aimed at supporting qualified BECE graduates who may otherwise miss placement due to limited space in public SHSs.

“This milestone reflects the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to equity and access in education,” the GES stated, adding that all participating private schools will undergo assessments and training to align with Free SHS operational standards.

Monitoring and evaluation will be carried out throughout the pilot phase, with potential for scaling the programme in future placement cycles.
